Layer 2 Switching Technologies
Layer 2 switching technologies are used to forward data packets between devices within a local area network (LAN). Layer 2 switching operates at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model and uses MAC addresses to determine the destination of a data packet.
One of the most common types of Layer 2 switching technology is Ethernet switching. Ethernet switches use MAC addresses to learn which devices are connected to which ports on the switch, and they use this information to forward data packets only to the appropriate port.
Other Layer 2 switching technologies include Token Ring switching, FDDI switching, and ATM switching. These technologies have been largely replaced by Ethernet switching, but they are still used in some specialized applications.
