VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) is a Cisco proprietary protocol used to manage VLANs on a network. VTP allows network administrators to configure VLANs on one switch and have those VLANs propagate to other switches automatically, reducing the need for manual VLAN configuration on each individual switch.
VTP also provides a way to synchronize VLAN information across the network, ensuring that all switches have the same VLAN database. However, it’s important to note that VTP can cause problems if not configured properly, such as unintentionally overwriting VLAN configurations on other switches or introducing unnecessary VLANs into the network.
